Huge traffic jams formed at EU borders with Ukraine in several hours after Schengen zone extension.
According to Deutsche Welle report on Monday, due to introducing enhanced control at Hungarian-Ukrainian and Polish-Ukrainian borders lines of trucks stretching for many kilometers have emerged, and the waiting time can often amount to thirty hours.
Hungarian customs officers note that due to cancellation of controls at EU internal borders these trucks have reached Ukrainian border much faster, which is also causing lines.
According to their data, their Ukrainian counterparts manage to let in only twenty trucks per hour.
The report states that the Hungarian side provides hot tea for freezing drivers and portable toilets along the line.
According to the data of Polish customs officers, huge people flow is also motivated by Catholic Christmas holidays. Many Ukrainians going abroad to visit their relatives wanted to use their old Polish visas.
According to previous reports, the new border regime between EU and Ukraine became effective on December 21 due to some more countries of Eastern Europe, in particular Poland and Hungary, entering so-called “Schengen zone”.
