Communist Party leader Petro Symonenko claims that President Yushchenko’s initiative on creation of a two-chamber Parliament will lead to Ukraine’s territorial division.
He considers a two-chamber Parliament in a unitary Ukraine as “a political absurdity and dangerous insanity”.
“I wonder when the President and his team were honest: when opposing Mr. Kuchma’s similar proposals, speaking about consolidation or preparing the country’s federalization with its further division into several territorial entities under the direct or indirect control of some countries, the United States of America in particular.”
Mr. Symonenko remarked that Mr. Yushchenko “tends not only to follow his predecessor but surpass him in usurpation of power, and elimination of democracy, sovereignty and statehood”.
The Communist leader severely criticizes Mr. Yushchenko’s idea of granting governors the right of veto. “Presently, this right is given only to the President and in a two-chamber Parliament it will be given to the Presidents’ protégées-governors.”
“No doubt, it will fully destroy Ukraine’s parliamentary system,” re-assured Mr. Symonenko.
“The President-appointed governors will have such power that inevitably weakens local self-government and territorial communities. This means that local self-government will fall down along with the parliamentary system.”
In Mr. Symonenko’s view, “all President Yushchenko’s actions were anti-state and during the past three months even unconstitutional and should be considered as a crime against the nation. Mr. Yushchenko aims at repealing the Political Reform and removing Ukraine’s citizens from decision making.”
“Mr. Yushchenko tends to split Ukraine and form a new, so-called ‘national ethnic Ukraine’, i.e. the state led by a nationalist dictator,” concluded the Communist leader.
