The fifth Verkhovna Rada MPs voted in favor of a draft law on amending the Ukrainian Constitution so as to strip parliamentarians, the President and judges of unlimited immunity.
The relevant law titled “On Making Amendments to the Constitution Regarding Immunity of Certain Dignitaries” was supported by 259 MPs.
The law needs approval of the Constitutional Court.
“Specifically, the law suggests excluding Parts 1 and 3, Article 80 and Part 1 Article 105 of the Constitution. The law may come in force on February 20, 2008,” said Socialist Ivan Boky who represented the law.
Speaker of the fifth Verkhovna Rada, Oleksandr Moroz, did not rule out that the Constitutional Court will specify the procedure of how the President, MPs and judges will be stripped of immunity.
“It is somewhat risky when it is about considerable limitation of immunity status with providing normal work for the President and MPs."
