How Ukrainska Pravda will use generative AI tools

Like other media outlets, Ukrainska Pravda has been actively exploring the potential of generative AI tools, including text, image and voice generators, to enhance our editorial capabilities. 

While AI software cannot replace the human touch in journalistic endeavours, it can aid in various aspects of content creation and presentation. Here's an overview of how we plan to employ these technologies.

Text generators 

We will not publish articles or content generated by AI, unless the purpose of the content is to showcase AI-generated text. 

AI may be employed to suggest headlines or short text for social media posts. These suggestions will undergo manual approval by our editorial team to ensure accuracy and alignment with our editorial standards.

AI can assist in generating story ideas by providing prompts for brainstorming. While this may save time, we acknowledge that it can produce less compelling ideas or deceptive leads. The ultimate decision on pursuing a story idea will remain a human prerogative.

If AI tools are used for research or analysis, they will serve as complementary aids. AI in this case should be considered a starting point, similar to Google Search.

Translating generators 

Ukrainska Pravda is exploring AI technology for translation services, albeit selectively. We predominantly rely on human translators to ensure the highest quality and contextual accuracy in our content. 

Our use of AI in translation is infrequent and primarily aimed at assisting our human translators in finding the most suitable words within a context. We are committed to maintaining the integrity of our content and will openly disclose instances where AI has been employed for translation purposes. 

Editing of content by AI is prohibited. We believe that editing is a nuanced process that requires human judgement, considering both subject-matter and readership.

Image generators 

We do not utilise AI-generated images as substitutes for stock photography until there is no transparent mechanism of fair compensation to creators.

Ukrainska Pravda may incorporate AI-generated images or videos in our content for illustration specific stories or publish them on social media. In such cases, we will openly acknowledge the use of generative AI.

We or the artists we collaborate with may use AI tools for idea generation. This process serves as a visual brainstorming exercise, where prompts are used to inspire creativity. However, any concepts generated by AI will still require the artists to produce original images using their standard creative methods, rather than reproducing what the AI suggests.

Voice generators

Ukrainska Pravda is expanding its use of AI technology to include voice-over services for podcasts originally recorded in Ukrainian. All the content for voice-over was prepared by our human translators and editors. 

We are committed to transparency and will openly disclose the use of AI-generated or AI-edited voices to our audience.

Historical audio documents (recordings of speeches, interviews with political and public figures, reportage audio recordings of witnesses to events whose authenticity can be confirmed by the editorial staff) cannot be edited using voice synthesis software.

We do not use voice generators to edit such audio recordings if this may cause the audience to have a distorted view of the true course of historical events. We use voice synthesis software only for reenactments, popular science, educational and entertainment materials, and all finished materials containing such recordings will contain an indication that the audio recordings were created in part or in full with the help of voice synthesis software.

Ukrainska Pravda is committed to staying at the forefront of technology while maintaining ethical and responsible journalistic practices. We acknowledge that AI may have limitations and could miss or distort relevant information. Therefore, our work remains completely human-centric. A human only will evaluate the effectiveness of artificial intelligence tools and make decisions on the publication of any product created or processed by AI. 

At the same time, all exclusive property copyrights to objects created or processed by AI belong to Ukrainska Pravda.
