Kyiv city authorities developed a vision for development of the City Zoo to upgrade it to European standards, the Mayor’s advisor Dmytro Bilotserkivets reported on Facebook. He said that the works will be finished by 2019, for the 110th anniversary of the Zoo.

The preliminary budget of the project is estimated to be about ₴300 million (about $12 milion).

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said: "The environment of the zoo will be upgraded to be as close as possible to the natural environment — there will be no loud attractions or grates for the animals. The zoo will have observation platforms, locations with a common environment for people and animals, and a long and interesting tour route."

In 2007, Kyiv Zoo was excluded from the European Association of Zoos as it does not meet standards for animal welfare.
