Journalist Alexander Shchetinin Found Dead in Suspected Suicide

The founder of information agency ‘Novy Region’ Alexander Shchetinin was found dead in Kyiv on the night of August 27. The press service of the Kyiv Office of the National Police reports that the people who discovered his body contacted the police at about midnight.

"A man with a gunshot wound to the head was discovered on the balcony. According to the preliminary evaluation of the pathologist, he died between 8pm and 9:30pm," the statement of the National Police says.

"The man, who was born in Russia in 1962, had lived in Kyiv for several years and was the head of an online media resource. The officers found a spent cartridge, a gun, cartridges and a suicide note. The doors to the apartment were closed, the interior looks intact," police reported.

A criminal case to investigate the incident was started, the murder is being qualified as suicide.

Kyiv Operatyvnyi reports that the body was discovered by friends, who came to greet Alexander on his birthday.

"Alexander was sitting on a chair, with a gunshot wound to his head, the gun was lying under the chair. According to credible sources, the case has been classified as suicide, as Alexander sent an email to one of his loved ones where he said he wanted to kill himself," the message says.
