Quote from Podoliak: "The Russian Orthodox Church’s statement about a ‘Christmas truce’ is a cynical trap and an element of propaganda."

Details: According to Podoliak, the Russian Orthodox Church is not an authority for global Orthodoxy and acts only as a "war propagandist".

He recalled that the Russian Orthodox Church has called for the genocide of Ukrainians, incited mass murder, and is pushing for even greater militarisation in Russia.

Background:

  • On 5 January, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, who has publicly approved of the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine, suddenly claimed that he is calling for a "Christmas truce".
  • Kirill has previously stated that the occupiers in Ukraine are protecting Russia and are "guided by an internal moral sense based on the Orthodox faith".
  • Kirill also made a speech in the Church of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation praising young Russians who join the ranks of the army and go off to kill Ukrainians.
  • However, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are not going to cease fire to celebrate anything until Russia withdraws its troops from the sovereign territory of Ukraine.
