Details: Carney stressed that Russia continues to underestimate the courage, determination and strength of the Ukrainian people despite its ongoing attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, schools, hospitals and residential buildings.
The prime minister called on Russia to end its war against Ukraine, noting that such attacks do not alter the fact that it is losing the war.
Quote: "We call on Russia to immediately cease these strikes and end this illegal war of aggression. They prolong human suffering and do nothing to change the fact that Russia will lose this war. Canada will continue working closely with international partners to secure a just and lasting peace for Ukraine and Europe."
Background:
- On the night of 23-24 May, Russia carried out another combined attack on Ukraine. During the strike, Russian forces used ballistic missiles and drones. In Kyiv, which was the main target of the attack, 44 people were injured and one person was killed.
- On 23 May, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to Kyiv's partners both in the United States and in Europe after receiving intelligence indicating that Russia was preparing a combined strike, possibly involving an Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile.
