Ukraine demands emergency UN Security Council meeting and OSCE sessions following Russian attack
Ukraine is demanding an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council and a joint session of the OSCE Forum for Security Co-operation and the OSCE Permanent Council following a large-scale Russian attack on the night of 23-24 May.
Source: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on X (Twitter), as reported by European Pravda
Details: Sybiha reported that he has instructed all Ukrainian missions at international organisations to make full use of the entire arsenal of multilateral measures in response to Russia's barbaric missile strike on Kyiv.
Quote: "The UN, OSCE, Council of Europe, and UNESCO should provide an adequate and strong response to the aggressor, which is attempting to compensate for the lack of military advances on the battlefield with terror against civilians.
We immediately request an urgent UN Security Council meeting and a joint meeting of the OSCE Forum for Security Co-operation and the OSCE Permanent Council."
More details: Sybiha said Russian ruler Vladimir Putin is attempting to intimidate Ukraine by attacking civilians and destroying homes, museums, schools and critical infrastructure facilities. He is also attempting to intimidate the world by launching intermediate-range missiles against peaceful cities, the minister added.
Quote: "All of this requires strong and coordinated action by the international community. We urge our partners to [take] resolute multilateral actions aimed at deterring Russia and compelling it toward a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace."
Background:
- The leaders of France and Germany have condemned Russia's latest large-scale attack on Ukraine.
- Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people following the attack.
- Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has also condemned the Russian attack and said further discussions on increasing pressure on Moscow will take place.
