Lukianivske Prison: 15 Detainees Died in Year to Date

A total of 15 detainees died in Lukianivske remand prison (SIZO) since the beginning of the year, two of whom committed suicide, Ukrayinski Novyny cite Oleksandr Vasiuk, Chief of the SIZO.

Vasiuk highlighted that the SIZO did not have capital investment for an extended period. Budget funds are only allocated for the repair of roof and sewage system.

According to Vasiuk, a total of 2,058 inmates are now detained in the prison, including 135 women and 15 minors.

The Ministry of Justice is considering to sell the building of Lukianivske SIZO through a public-private partnership modality, given that the investor will construct a more spacious building for the SIZO in Kyiv suburbs.

Yevgen Zakharov, Head of the Board of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union, is sure that the SIZO should have been moved to the suburbs a long time ago.
