Quote: "The mandatory evacuation of civilians from Donetsk Oblast announced by the government earlier has begun in earnest. Over 2,000 civilians – including women, children, the elderly and people with reduced mobility – have been evacuated over the course of the first week.

Some of them even bring their pets along. We would like to remind you that the Donetsk oblast Evacuation Coordination Staff is headed by Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk."

Details: The ministry has also reported that the government was able to repatriate three Ukrainian children from the territory of the Russian Federation. A total of 50 Ukrainian children who had been illegally taken to Russia have now been repatriated.

Background:

  • The Ukrainian government has introduced mandatory evacuation of residents of Ukrainian-controlled parts of Donetsk Oblast ahead of the colder months. Vereshchuk has said that the government fears there might be no heat, gas, or power in Donetsk Oblast in winter because the Russian forces are deliberately targeting essential infrastructure.
  • The evacuees will receive a monthly payment of 2,000-3,000 hryvnias [approximately $54-80 - ed.].
