Ukrainian Defence Forces are verifying information about death of Russian General Goryachev

The Defence Forces are clarifying information about the likely death of Major General Sergei Goryachev, the Chief of Staff of the 35th Combined Arms Army of Russia.

Background: Reports of Goryachev’s death on the Zaporizhzhia front appeared on social media on the evening of 12 June.

Background:

• As of May 2022, up to 10 Russian generals have been killed in Ukraine.
• In February 2023, Japanese intelligence reported that more than 20 Russian generals had been killed in Ukraine. 
• Russia does not report losses in its armed forces, especially among the military leadership.
