On 26 February 2022, Ukraine filed a lawsuit at the ICJ on Russia's violation of the Genocide Convention.

Ukraine also simultaneously filed a motion on prevention measures in which it essentially asked the ICJ to order Russia to stop its war in Ukraine.

In its lawsuit, Ukraine does not claim that the Kremlin committed genocide against the Ukrainian people in February 2022. However, Kyiv mentions potential planning to commit it.
