Ex-president warns Moldova about being pulled into "NATO's war with Russia"

Igor Dodon, Former President of Moldova, leader of the Socialist Party, has called President Maia Sandu's statement about the fact that the government is considering revising the country's neutral status due to Russia's aggression against Ukraine, "dangerous".

Details: Dodon saw in Maia Sandu's statement signs that she "acts on the orders of overseas masters", seemingly against the country's interests and sovereignty.

Quote: "Our citizens want to maintain neutrality and peace, as evidenced by numerous social surveys, and they will never agree to become cannon fodder for NATO in the war against Russia," Dodon said.

Maia Sandu’s Administration has not yet responded to his words.

Background: When Sandu was asked in an interview with Politico about the possibility of Moldova joining NATO, Sandu said that the Moldovan government is discussing how much the country is capable of defending itself and whether it should become a member of a larger security alliance. "And if we come, at some point, to the conclusion as a nation that we need to change neutrality, this should happen through a democratic process," Maia Sandu said.

Moldova, according to its Constitution, is a neutral country, but cooperates with the Alliance, in particular by participating in peacekeeping forces in the partially recognized Kosovo. The country's representative took part in the December NATO meeting in Bucharest for the first time in December 2022.

It is worth to note that the majority of Moldovan citizens would oppose joining NATO today.
