Russia deploys 5 warships to Black and Azov seas – Ukraine’s Navy

The Military Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine say that Russia has three warships on combat duty in the Black Sea, and two ships in the Sea of Azov.

Details: According to the Ukrainian army, as of 4 January 2023:

  • there are 3 Russian ships on combat duty in the Black Sea;
  • Russians continue to control sea communications, keeping 2 ships on combat duty in the Azov Sea;
  • there are 9 Russian ships in the Mediterranean Sea, including 5 carriers of Kalibr cruise missiles, and a total salvo of 76 missiles.

Over the past day, in the interests of the Russian Federation, the passage through the Kerch-Yenikale Strait was carried out:

  • to the Sea of Azov: 23 vessels, 5 of them were moving from the Bosphorus Strait;
  • to the Black Sea: 18 vessels, of which 6 vessels continued to move in the direction of the Bosphorus Strait;
 

The Navy noted that Russia continues to violate the 1974 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) by disabling automatic identification systems (AIS) on civilian vessels in the Azov Sea.
