UK Prime Minister advocates expanded capabilities of NATO standard for Ukraine

Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has advocated for the creation of enhanced NATO-standard capabilities for Ukraine, which should give it protection before it becomes a member of the Alliance.

Sunak noted that Ukraine needs more artillery, armoured vehicles, and air defence to win the war. So, now is the moment to double down on military support, according to the British Prime Minister.

According to Sunak, when Putin started this war, he gambled that the resolve of the Western support would falter, even now, Putin is betting that Ukraine’s allies will lose their nerve.

"We have proved him wrong then. And we will prove him wrong now," Sunak said.

According to Sunak, in the coming months, Ukraine will receive as much equipment from its allies as in the whole of 2022.

"To win the peace, we also need to rebuild the international order on which our collective security depends," Sunak continued.

According to him, that means upholding international law, and the whole world must hold Russia accountable.

Sunak also emphasised that treaties and agreements of the post Cold War era have failed Ukraine.

"So we need a new framework for its long-term security. From Georgia to Moldova, Russia has committed violation after violation against countries outside the collective security of NATO. And the international community’s response has not been strong enough," Sunak said.

He recalled the words of the NATO Secretary General that Ukraine will become a member of the Alliance.

"But until that happens, we need to do more to boost Ukraine’s long-term security. We must give them the advanced NATO-standard capabilities that they need for the future. And we must demonstrate that we will remain by their side, willing and able to help them defend their country again and again. Ukraine needs and deserves assurances of that support," Sunak said.

Sunak said that, ahead of the summit in Vilnius, Ukraine’s friends will have to gather to begin building those long-term assurances.

"And our aim should be to form a new Charter in Vilnius to help protect Ukraine from future Russian aggression," Sunak emphasised.
