Germany's Federal Employment Agency believes that Ukrainian refugees who have arrived in the country since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion have helped to reduce the burden on the local labour market.

As Terzenbach states, 65,000 more Ukrainians have been paying social security contributions in Germany since February 2022, which indicates their official employment. Another 21,000 Ukrainians are employed in so-called mini-jobs (with an income of up to €450 per month, which allows them to qualify for social benefits).

As he explains, this also serves to combat the shortage of personnel in the German economy. "The German labour market is receptive," the official added.

Terzenbach predicts that the number of employees from Ukraine will increase significantly in the coming weeks and months, particularly in the second quarter, after they complete integration and professional language courses at the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.

Terzenbach states that a large number of refugees from Ukraine are willing to stay in Germany for a longer period of time and learn German. "We see a very high level of motivation, even to the point of overpaying taxes," he emphasised.

According to the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, the number of Ukrainians in Germany has increased seven times in a year since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion. In 2022, about 1.1 million immigrants from Ukraine were reported, and net immigration amounted to 962,000 people.
