The president said he had thanked McCarthy for the US Congress’s bipartisan support of Ukraine. He also outlined the situation at the front and Ukraine’s urgent defence needs in terms of armoured vehicles, long-range artillery, air defence and aviation.

"I assured him that Ukraine is prepared to account for every dollar of US aid [spent]," the message says.

The president and the speaker of the US House of Representatives had also discussed the need to increase sanctions pressure on Russia and reduce the price cap on Russian oil and gas.

Finally, Zelenskyy invited McCarthy to visit Ukraine. The latter declined a similar offer in March.

The US politician has not yet commented on the conversation publicly.

Kevin McCarthy, who was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives in January, has previously said that although he is in favour of ongoing support for Ukraine in its full-scale war with Russia, he does not agree to writing, as he put it, a "blank cheque".
