Quote: "China’s position on the Ukraine crisis is consistent and clear-cut. We believe that all sides need to work towards creating enabling conditions for a political settlement of the crisis through dialogue and negotiation," said the spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Background: Earlier, Fu Cong, the Chinese ambassador to the European Union, said that he did not exclude Beijing's support for Ukraine's desire to restore territorial integrity, returning to its borders as of 1991.

When asked by the journalists about supporting Ukraine's goals, in particular the return of Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia, the Chinese diplomat replied, "I don’t see why not".

In April, Lu Shaye, China’s ambassador to France, said in an interview that former Soviet republics "lack effective status in international law because there is no international agreement to give substance to their status".
