Wednesday, 13 September 2023, 19:59

The European Commission claims that they did not initiate the extension of temporary restrictions on imports of Ukrainian agricultural products, the validity of which expires on 15 September.

Source: Miriam Garcia Ferrer, spokeswoman for the European Commission for Agriculture and Trade, said this in a comment to PAP, writes European Pravda

Details: The spokeswoman denied the information that Michael Hager, the head of the office of Valdis Dombrovskis, European Commissioner for Trade, allegedly submitted a proposal to extend the existing restrictions.

"I cannot confirm this information because it is incorrect," the spokeswoman said.

Previously: On Wednesday, 13 September, the Polish RMF24 reported that the European Commission had submitted a proposal to extend the temporary ban on the import of certain types of Ukrainian agricultural products after 15 September, as demanded by Poland and Hungary. The proposal was made by Michael Hager.

After that, Vsevolod Chentsov, the representative of Ukraine to the EU, said that the official denied this information while answering his question.

However, after the meeting of the platform, a decision on the strategy of action of the European Commission has yet to be made, and it is impossible to guarantee that such a proposal will not appear before 15 September.

Background:

  • Ukraine stated that the unilateral extension of the ban would violate the rules of the common market and the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU.
  • According to the trade representative of Ukraine, data from the EU show that the extension of the ban on exports from Ukraine has no grounds and has not solved the problems of European farmers during the period of action.
  • Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that Ukraine would request the arbitration of the World Trade Organisation if Poland blocked the export of Ukrainian grain.
