Nikol Pashinyan, Prime Minister of Armenia, has called the security structures that his country has been relying on ineffective.

Quote: "The latest attacks undertaken by Azerbaijan against the Republic of Armenia lead to an obvious conclusion that the external security systems in which we are involved are not effective from the point of view of the state interests and security of the Republic of Armenia," Pashinyan said.

The Armenian prime minister emphasised that the security systems and allies on which his country has relied for many years "demonstrated our vulnerability".

Armenia is part of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO), which is de facto headed by the Russian Federation. Recently, relations between Armenia and the CSTO have significantly cooled. After the war over Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020, the CSTO never provided any practical assistance to Yerevan.

Background: Recently, Pashinyan spoke about the "failures" of Russian peacekeepers in the unrecognised Nagorno-Karabakh, which led to the latest escalation.

He also said last week that Armenia could no longer rely on Russia as a guarantor of its security.
