Zelenskyy and European Commission President discuss alternative grain routes

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has held talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in order to coordinate positions as important international events approach.

According to Zelenskyy, they discussed alternative grain routes and agreed to maintain a constructive dialogue on lifting unilateral restrictions by EU member states and to look for ways to support Ukrainian farmers.

Earlier, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba at an informal meeting called on EU foreign ministers to join in to ensure the operation of the grain initiative which Kyiv is continuing without Russia's involvement.

Background: Ukraine opened registration for merchant ships and their owners to use temporary routes to and from Odesa ports after Russia unilaterally withdrew from the Black Sea grain initiative.

The first ship to use the Ukrainian Black Sea corridor after Russia’s withdrawal from the grain initiative arrived in Istanbul, Türkiye, on 18 August.

In September, Ukrainian grain started being exported through Croatian ports. The agriculture ministers of Poland and Lithuania will meet on Tuesday to discuss cooperation on the transit of Ukrainian grain.
