German government calls on employers to hire Ukrainians without sufficient language skills

Saturday, 18 November 2023, 09:43

Hubertus Heil, Germany’s Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, believes that employers should hire Ukrainian refugees who have not yet managed to learn the German language at the proper level but have a basic knowledge of it.

Details: Heil wants to help refugees from Ukraine find work as soon as possible and so, he says, employers should be "willing to hire these people, even if they only have a basic knowledge of German".

He believes that Ukrainians will be able to gain sufficient mastery of the language not only by attending classes but also directly at work, and he wants to discuss this issue with German businesses on Monday, 20 November.

At the same time, Heil noted that 100,000 Ukrainians have completed integration language courses in Germany and 100,000 more will do so in the near future. The same applies to another 200,000 people from other countries of origin who can work.

"Job centres will invite them [to come in] at shorter and more regular intervals so that they can provide them with as many targeted job offers as possible and support them on their way to employment," Heil added.

Background: Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, more than a million people from Ukraine have sought protection in Germany.

According to government data, in July, there were about 196,600 employed Ukrainian citizens in Germany, of whom 154,600 were paying social security contributions and 42,000 were employed in low-paid or part-time jobs.

As of September, there were 205,970 unemployed Ukrainians in Germany.
