20 Days in Mariupol by Mstyslav Chernov, which Ukraine nominated as its Oscars contender, is on two lists: Best Documentary and Best International Feature.

20 Days in Mariupol is a documentary based on footage shot by Ukrainian photo and video journalists during the early days of Russia’s attack on Mariupol. The film consists of footage that Chernov and his colleagues sent to international media outlets covering the events in the encircled city: children and adults dying, mass graves appearing, constant bombardment, a maternity hospital being destroyed by a Russian airstrike, and other Russian war crimes.

In addition to Chernov's film, four other Ukrainian and co-produced films have been shortlisted in the Best Documentary category:

  • Photophobia by Ivan Ostrokhovskyi and Pavol Pekarčík. This film, produced by Slovakia, Czechia and Ukraine, tells the story of 12-year-old Mykyta, who is hiding from the war with his family, living in a Kharkiv metro station.
