Onyshchenko ‘to Take Case to European Court of Human Rights’

MP Oleksandr Onyshchenko says he is going to go the European Court of Human Rights because of political persecution in Ukraine, he said on Sunday, August 14, in a comment to 112 TV channel.

"I have hard evidence that this whole case has a political grounds, but given that nobody is going to listen to me in Ukraine… I cannot count on a just decision. That’s why I decided to do this through a European court where I can prove that the case [against me] is political and achieve some results," Onyshchenko said.

He said that he provided his London contacts to NABU and anti-corruption prosecutors, but nobody contacted him. "They are busy discrediting my image, so they don’t want to do any lawful actions," Onyshchenko commented. He added that Chief Anti-Corruption Prosecutor Kholodnytskyi was fulfilling the President’s orders.

Onyshchenko said he has not yet asked for political asylum in the UK, but he would do that if Ukraine asks for extradition. He added that he was preparing a press conference in London where he is planning to reveal "what Ukrainian authorities have against him."

On Tuesday, August 9, Solomyanka District Court of Kyiv ruled to allow Onyshchenko’s arrest. On Thursday, August 11, Interpol Ukraine received materials to put Onyshchenko on an international wanted list, and is planning to submit them to Interpol.

Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko says that the extradition will depend on whether the court in London will find the evidence provided by NABU and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office convincing.
