Details: According to Kovalenko, as of Saturday evening, the situation in Kyiv "remains difficult and critical".

"The ‘patient's’ life is not in danger, but the situation is still nowhere near stabilised," he said.

Background:

  • On 16 December, the Russians launched a massive missile attack on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure. They fired 70 cruise missiles and 4 guided air missiles. 60 cruise missiles were shot down by air defence forces. As a result of the attack, several energy infrastructure facilities and residential buildings were damaged in Zhytomyr, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts.
  • Mayor of Kyiv Vitalii Klitschko confirmed explosions in the Holosiivskyi, Desnianskyi and Dnipro neighbourhoods of the capital. Following the attack in Kyiv, the metro stopped running and there were electricity, water and heat supply outages.
  • On Saturday morning, service was resumed on the Kyiv metro and the water supply was restored. However, a third of Kyiv residents remained without electricity. As of Saturday evening, heating had been restored for 75% of Kyiv residents.
