The Ukrainian President's Office (UPO) and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), have discussed the involvement of the WTO in the implementation of the second point of the Ukrainian peace formula, i.e. Food Security.

Details: The meeting primarily discussed protecting free trade, especially in the Black Sea, which is currently facing challenges due to Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

Yermak stressed that Russia's deliberate targeting of Ukraine's transport and agricultural infrastructure and the "blockade" of Ukrainian ports threatens the supply of Ukrainian agrarian products and amounts to food blackmail. This poses an immediate threat to food security and violates freedom of trade.

Therefore, he proposed considering the possible involvement of the World Trade Organisation in implementing the second point of the Ukrainian formula for peace, entitled Food Security. The head of the UPO believes the WTO's authority and influence on international trade may play a major part in implementing this point.

The parties agreed to make efforts to resume Ukraine's fully-fledged exports, strengthen food security in the world, mainly through the humanitarian initiative Grain from Ukraine, strengthen the role of the WTO in restoring peace in Ukraine, and overcome poverty and hunger in the world.

Background: So far, 58 countries have supported the drafting of the Ukrainian peace formula.
