Details: Mediazona came to this conclusion after the statement of Vsevolod Vukolov, the Deputy Minister of Justice of the Russian Federation.

He reported that currently, there are 266,000 people in correctional colonies.

As the publication notes, this is the first public report on the number of prisoners in the colonies after the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia stopped publishing similar statistics in November 2022 amid the recruitment of convicts to the Wagner Group. Journalists say that compared to previous years, the increase is significantly  greater.

Background:

  • UK intelligence previously reported that the Russian Ministry of Defence had intensified the scheme for recruiting Russian convicts to participate in the war in Ukraine since the beginning of 2023.
  • The mass media reported in April that correctional facilities in 35 regions of Russia lost 17,000 convicts during the war in Ukraine.
