The Ukrainian border guards - and everyone crossing the Ukrainian-Moldovan border at the time - were "briefly immersed in the magical atmosphere of the festive event", a statement said.

"We follow traditions, and on the eve of the winter holidays, we surprise our Ukrainian counterparts and anyone travelling with carols and festive greetings!" the Moldovan border guards said.

Yesterday, Irish Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue officially approved the entry of Santa's reindeer into the European Union.

And a 24-year-old man named Mario from Frosinone, central Italy, escaped from house arrest and went to prison, explaining that he did not want to spend Christmas alone.
