Ukrainian authorities have reported that the Russians have completely demolished the building of the Mariinska Girls’ Gymnasium in Mariupol, which was almost 130 years old.

The historic building was built in 1894 and survived both World Wars.

Collegiate School No. 1 had been located there, as the Mariupol City Council reported.

"Russian invaders persist in destroying our history, culture and architectural monuments. The buildings that were an integral part of the memory and history of Mariupol have now turned into a pile of stones.

A school had been opened there after World War II. Thousands of Mariupol children studied here. The Russians destroyed the building in 2022... Now it's a wasteland," the city council said.

The building was constructed in the 19th century for the Mariinska Girls’ Secondary School, but in 1920, it was shut down. The Unified Labour Model School No 1 started operating in the building in 1921, and it served as a hospital during World War II.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the school, Mariupol residents created the School History Museum, which exhibited unique materials from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Russian occupying forces destroyed the building of Collegiate School No 1 in March 2022.
