The capital’s worst tragedy: death toll of 29 December attack on Kyiv rises to 29

Another body has been found at a site hit in the 29 December missile attack in Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi district, bringing the death toll to 29 on the third day of search and rescue operations.

Quote: "For three days in a row, rescue workers have been conducting a search and rescue operation after the airstrike on Kyiv. Sadly, they are still finding the bodies of people killed by Russian missiles. As of 22:30 today, 29 people have been found dead.

This is the worst tragedy for the capital since the start of the full-scale invasion."

Background:

  • On the night and morning of 28-29 December, Russia launched a massive air attack on Ukraine. Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Odesa, Lviv, Zaporizhzhia and other cities were targeted. 
  • In total, air defence managed to destroy 114 out of 158 Russian aerial targets over Ukraine. According to the Air Force, the Russian Federation used almost every type of weaponry available at its disposal.
  • On the morning of 1 January, rescue workers retrieved five more bodies from under the rubble. This brought the death toll to 28.
  • 1 January was declared a Day of Mourning in the capital.
