Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office receives request from President's Office to open proceedings against Belarusian leader Lukashenko

The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine has received a request from the President's Office asking it to consider opening criminal proceedings against self-proclaimed Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko.

Quote from Haiovska: "On 30 July 2026, the Prosecutor General's Office registered a request received from the Office of the President of Ukraine for consideration within its remit. The request is currently under review. Once it has been processed, the applicants will be informed in accordance with the procedure established by law."

Details: Haiovska added that no criminal proceedings have been registered on the basis of this request so far.

On 28 July, the Forum of Democratic Forces of Belarus published on its Telegram channel a letter addressed to the Forum and signed by Oleh Tatarov, Deputy Head of the President's Office. The letter said that the Forum's request had been forwarded to the Prosecutor General's Office.

In its earlier request to the President's Office, the Belarusian opposition asked for a legal assessment of Lukashenko's actions in connection with his role in supporting Russian aggression against Ukraine, the use of Belarusian territory for the invasion by Russian troops, and other matters.

The authors of the request asked for consideration of opening criminal proceedings under a number of articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, including those providing for liability for waging a war of aggression, war crimes, financing terrorism, encroachment on Ukraine's territorial integrity, propaganda for war, and genocide.
