Details: The agreement to extend the JIT’s work was reached at a coordination meeting of the group's members, which coincided with the United for Justice Conference in Kyiv, dedicated to bringing to justice those responsible for war crimes and other international crimes in Ukraine.

During the coordination meeting, the participants discussed the results of the JIT's work and its priorities for the next two years, Eurojust said.

Eurojust provides legal, analytical, logistical and financial support to the JIT and has hosted 22 coordination meetings since March 2022. These are attended by JIT members and other national authorities investigating alleged core international crimes committed in Ukraine.

Background:

  • Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania established a joint working group to investigate war crimes committed by Russian troops in Ukraine on 25 March 2022. The group was later joined by Estonia, Latvia, Slovakia and Romania.
  • The United States announced its cooperation with the JIT in March 2023. Eurojust, Europol and, for the first time in its history, the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court are also members of the group.
  • Among other things, JIT members communicate with Ukrainian citizens – victims and witnesses – who are in their countries.
