"I would disabuse you at this early hour of any connection to Ukraine," he stressed.

The White House commented on the attack in Moscow, saying that footage of the shooting in the Russian capital was "just horrible and hard to watch".

Background:

  • Armed men in camouflage opened fire at the Crocus City Hall in Krasnogorsk, Moscow Oblast, prior to a concert by the band Piknik. The Russian authorities are reporting deaths and injuries, the number of which is currently unknown. The concert had sold out and there may have been more than 2,000 people in the building. A grenade explosion caused a fire to break out in the building, and the roof has started to collapse.
  • On 8 March, the US Embassy in Russia and the UK Foreign Office warned of possible terrorist attacks in Moscow.
