Verkhovna Rada Votes on New Biometric Passports

The Verkhovna Rada approved amendments to legislation, introducing on biometric passports for citizens of Ukraine. The corresponding bill #3224 was put to vote several times, and was eventually supported by 226 MPs, Interfax Ukraine reports.

According to the new law, passports will be issued when citizens become 14-years-old, and there will be no marriage stamp. The first passport received by an underage citizen will be valid for four years until they turn 18, all further passports will have 10-year validity.

The passport will include digitized fingerprints. For all adult citizens, it will also incorporate an electronic signature.
