EU leaders' meeting to focus solely on Ukraine and European defence

It has been confirmed that Ukraine and the EU's defence are the only two issues to be considered at an informal meeting of EU leaders on 1 October.

More details: Regarding Ukraine, the source has indicated that discussions will focus on three key points: EU financing for Ukraine in the coming years, EU enlargement and the 19th package of EU sanctions against Russia.

On the defence, the official has highlighted the increasing urgency of the issue, particularly in light of recent airspace violations in several European countries involving drones and fighter jets.

Quote: "The discussion in Copenhagen will help shape conclusions that [European Council – ed.] President Costa hopes will be adopted by the European Council at the end of this month."

Further details: He recalled that the European Commission is preparing a corresponding action plan, the final version of which will be presented before the official meeting of the European Council in Brussels on 23 October, and may be approved by EU leaders the same day.

Background:

  • It was reported earlier that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will join the informal meeting of EU leaders on 1 October in Copenhagen via video link, but will attend the European Political Community (EPC) summit there in person the following day.
  • France, Germany and Sweden announced on Monday 29 September that they will send troops and anti-drone systems to Denmark to strengthen security at the European summits in Copenhagen the upcoming week.
