Details: Police in the village of Gostitsi of Russia's Leningrad Oblast have been alerted to suspected poisoning on 24 and 25 September after reports from residents and medical facilities.

Seven people have died and three more have been hospitalised after drinking surrogate alcohol.

Identical unlabelled empty bottles have been found in the homes of the victims.

A resident of Gostitsi has been detained for buying denatured alcohol, diluting it with water and selling it to fellow villagers.

A woman from a neighbouring village, who supplied the alcohol, has also been detained along with other people involved in distributing the dilution.

Authorities have arrested 14 people in connection with the case.
