Kremlin responds to Trump's instruction to his special envoy to "focus on Russia"

Russian leader Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said that Moscow "supports" US President Donald Trump's instruction to Steve Witkoff, his Special Envoy to the Middle East, to focus on resolving the war that Russia is waging against Ukraine.

Details: According to the Kremlin spokesman, Moscow "supports the political will of the United States to seek ways to achieve a peaceful settlement" and called Witkoff "an effective mediator".

Quote from Peskov: "We are already well acquainted with Mr Witkoff; he is effective, he has proven his effectiveness now in the Middle East, and we hope that his talents will continue to contribute to the work already underway in Ukraine."

Details: Peskov also stated that "the Russian side remains open to dialogue" and expects that "the influence of the US will encourage Ukraine to be more active in the peace process".

Background: On 13 October, US President Donald Trump urged Steve Witkoff, his Special Envoy to the Middle East, to focus on resolving the issue of the Russo-Ukrainian war once the conflict in Gaza is over.
