Polish President Karol Nawrocki has said that the visit of his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy is good news for Warsaw and Kyiv, but bad news for Moscow.

Details: Nawrocki recalled that Zelenskyy had arrived in Warsaw at his invitation.

Nawrocki said that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to Warsaw was good news for Poland, for Warsaw and Kyiv, and for the entire region, but bad news for the Russian Federation, as it demonstrated that on strategic and security issues Poland, Ukraine, and the countries of the region stood together.

He added that he shares with Zelenskyy a common view of Russia as a neo-imperial post-Soviet state that poses a threat to Europe.

Background:

  • Earlier, the Polish President's Chancellery said that the talks between the two leaders would focus on security, historical and economic issues.
  • This is the first official meeting between the leaders of the two countries since Karol Nawrocki took office on 6 August. It comes after repeated calls in Poland for President Zelenskyy to visit Warsaw.
  • Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk had previously suggested that he might be delayed at the EU leaders' summit and arrive late for his meeting with the Ukrainian president in Warsaw on 19 December.
