Quote: "We are ready to consider ensuring security if Ukraine were to hold elections, at least by refraining from strikes deep inside the territory on voting day."
Details: Putin made the remarks while commenting on the difficulties Ukraine would encounter in holding elections during the war. He also believes Ukrainians currently in Russia should be able to participate in the vote.
Background:
- On 10 December, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed with representatives of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian parliament) the possibility of holding presidential elections in wartime Ukraine and is now waiting for MPs to "present their perspective".
- US President Donald Trump believes that "it's time" for Ukraine to hold presidential elections.
- Zelenskyy responded to this reproach and said that he is "always ready".
- He also said that international partners must ensure security during elections. Zelenskyy himself is ready for changes to election legislation during martial law.
