US security guarantees for Ukraine depend on Trump – Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that the final security guarantees the United States provides to Ukraine will depend on Donald Trump's decision.

Details: Zelenskyy thanked the US side for openness in discussing security guarantees, saying "these are the security guarantees America gives Ukraine, not the other way round".

Quote: "For us it is very important that there is a signal that we want legally binding security guarantees. That depends first of all on President Trump. The question is what security guarantees President Trump is ready to give Ukraine."

More details: Zelenskyy added that legally binding guarantees also depend on a decision by Congress.

Quote: "We are also grateful to the teams for discussing this and for the shared vision, but it will still depend on the US president: what he is ready to give, when he is ready to give it and for how long. Of course, I'll be grateful to him if his decision aligns with our desire."

Background:

• Zelenskyy said earlier that the current proposal for US post-war security guarantees for Ukraine covers a 15-year period.
• The security guarantees for Ukraine, which are to be finalised at a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in Paris in January 2026, will consist of three lines of defence providing for the presence of foreign troops in Ukraine and NATO Article 5-style commitments.
