Ukrainian forces destroy rare Russian signals intelligence system

Drone operators from the Raid unit, Ukraine's 413th Regiment of the Unmanned Systems Forces (USF), have destroyed an Artikul-S, a rare Russian signals intelligence system. It was used to detect communications and command-and-control networks belonging to Ukraine's defence forces across a wide range of frequencies.

Details: The regiment said its troops had carried out a complex operation to hit the system. A video released by the Raid unit shows the Artikul-S being destroyed by an attack drone. The system was housed inside a protective cylindrical shaft sunk into the ground and resembling a concrete well with an open top.

The unit said there had previously been no public reports of the Russian military using the Artikul-S system specifically against the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The station is known to be produced by Irkos, a Russian company. The system's basic configuration includes a direction-finding antenna array, digital receivers and a hardware-and-software suite with remote control.

Artikul-S is deployed as a fixed installation and is fairly bulky, as seen in the footage of the strike.

"Destroying such a system has blinded the enemy in a key section of the front," the unit said.

Background: It was reported that Ukraine's 413th Regiment Raid had hit a Russian Strela-10 surface-to-air missile system in a heavily contested frontline area, damaging the launch rails and rendering the system inoperative.
