Details: The incident on the Isaccea-Vulcănești-MGRES high-voltage line led to damage and disconnections in the energy system.

The electricity transmission system operator Moldelectrica is working to stabilise the situation, and power supply has already been restored in some localities.

Moldovan news outlet NewsMaker reported that at least Chișinău and its suburbs were affected, as well as Taraclia, Cahul and Anenii Noi.

Background:

  • It is worth noting that this was reported at the same time as information emerged that metro train services and escalators were temporarily suspended in Kyiv due to a loss of voltage from external power supply centres.
  • Kyiv City State Administration said that emergency power outages occurred in Kyiv, as in many other Ukrainian cities. It also reported disruptions to the water supply and heating in some districts of the capital.
  • On 29 January, US President Donald Trump said he had asked Russia's leader to pause strikes "on Kyiv and other cities" for a week on humanitarian grounds, and that he had allegedly agreed.
  • Trump did not specify when this took place or when the "one-week" countdown was supposed to begin.
  • A new round of talks on a potential peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine is expected on 1 February. US State Secretary Marco Rubio has said that US Special Representative Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner will not be attending, but US participation is "likely".
