Details: The White House is seeking to use the meeting to push forward the implementation of the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire deal and raise funds for reconstruction.

"It will be the first Board of Peace meeting and a fundraising conference for Gaza reconstruction," a US official said.

Plans for the summit are at an early stage and could still change.

The "Board of Peace" chaired by Trump currently has 27 members. The UN Security Council has authorised it to oversee the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement and work on governance and reconstruction.

On Friday 6 February, the Trump administration began contacting dozens of countries to invite their leaders and discuss logistics. The meeting is planned to take place at the Institute of Peace, which Trump recently renamed in his own honour.

"Nothing has been confirmed yet, but the administration is planning it and has started checking which leaders are able to attend," one source said.

Israeli officials say that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is due to meet Trump at the White House on 18 February, a day before the planned gathering.

Background:

  • Trump signed documents in Davos, Switzerland, to establish his new "Board of Peace" on 22 January.
  • From the European Union, only the prime ministers of Hungary and Bulgaria attended the ceremony.
  • Belarus and Russia were invited to join the Board. On 20 January, self-proclaimed Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko became the first world leader to sign an official confirmation that his country would accept Trump's invitation to join the "Board of Peace".
  • Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin said that Russia is willing to contribute US$1 billion from Russian assets frozen in the US to Trump's "Board of Peace for Gaza".
