Germany’s Merz calls for urgent disbursement of €90bn EU loan to Ukraine

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stressed that a €90 billion loan for Ukraine which has already been agreed within the European Union must be disbursed immediately.

Details: Merz also emphasised the need to adopt the 20th package of sanctions against Russia as soon as possible.

"We should not pay any attention to the one country in the European Union which, for domestic political reasons and due to the election campaign currently underway there, is creating this blockade in Europe," added Merz, clearly referring to Hungary, where parliamentary elections are due to take place in April.

  • Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has announced that Hungary will continue to block the adoption of the EU's 20th Russia sanctions package and the €90 billion loan for Ukraine until Kyiv resumes oil transit via the Druzhba pipeline.
