Hungarian opposition leader outlines his approach to Russia
Péter Magyar, leader of Hungary's opposition Tisza party, has said his future government would pursue a "pragmatic" approach towards Russia.
Source: Magyar in an interview with the Associated Press, as reported by European Pravda
Details: Magyar also criticised the current rapprochement between Hungary and Russia under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Quote: "Pragmatism means that we have no say in Russia's internal affairs, and they don't have any say in our affairs. We are both sovereign countries, and we respect each other, but we don't have to like each other."
Details: Magyar criticised Orbán's government for failing to diversify the country's energy balance and advocated concluding new agreements and building new infrastructure to supply oil and gas to landlocked Hungary from alternative sources.
However, he said that "this does not mean that we must stop using Russian oil tomorrow".
"It means that the European Union's resources must be used well," the opposition leader added.
Background:
- Parliamentary elections are due to be held in Hungary on 12 April, in which long-serving Prime Minister Viktor Orbán could lose to the opposition Tisza party led by Péter Magyar.
- Meanwhile, the EU is also discussing possible steps if Orbán manages to remain in power and Hungary continues to obstruct key EU decisions.
