Hungary’s Tisza party wins constitutional majority in parliament

Hungary's opposition Tisza party, led by Péter Magyar, is set to form a single-party majority and control more than two-thirds of seats in parliament following the election.

Details: According to results based on 90% of ballots counted, three political forces will enter parliament. The opposition Tisza party has received 54.3% of the vote. The incumbent ruling party Fidesz has secured 37.5%, while the far-right pro-Russian Mi Hazánk party has gained 5.8%.

Due to Hungary's complex mixed electoral system, in which most MPs are elected in single-member constituencies and votes are also redistributed into national party lists, percentages do not translate directly into seats.

Estimates from Hungarian media indicate that Tisza will secure a constitutional majority. Atlatszo projects that Tisza will win 138 seats, Fidesz 54 and Mi Hazánk 7 under current figures.

A total of 133 seats is required to form a constitutional majority.

Background:

• A two-thirds majority would allow the new government to overhaul the system built by Viktor Orbán.
• The possibility of such a result emerged after reports about actions by government officials that may amount to state treason in favour of Russia.
