France may propose that Greece send 43 fighter jets to Ukraine in Rafale deal
France plans to propose that Greece transfer 43 Mirage 2000 fighter jets to Ukraine, along with spare parts, in exchange for favourable terms when purchasing Rafale aircraft.

Details: French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to present the proposal during a visit to Greece on 24-25 April. According to Greek media outlet Estia, Athens could exchange all 43 Mirage 2000 jets and their spare parts for the equivalent number of Rafale aircraft at a discounted price.
The fleet comprises 24 Mirage 2000-5 fighters and 19 older Mirage 2000 EGM/BGM aircraft, some of which may no longer be operational.
In return, France would offer Greece a comparable number of Rafale jets at a reduced price, though the exact terms have yet to be negotiated.
The deal would enable Greece's 114th Fighter Wing to fully equip two squadrons with a total of 36 Rafale aircraft.
Background:
- In March 2024, Greece announced plans to retire and sell its older fighter jets, including Mirage 2000 EGM/BGM and Mirage 2000-5 models, as part of a major military reform programme.
- The Greek Air Force plans to acquire F4.3 Rafale fighter jets and is also considering the F5, which is expected to enter service in 2035 at the earliest.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at the end of January after talks with Macron that France would supply additional aircraft to Ukraine this year.
