Regards Célestes / Heavenly Photographers, an exhibition dedicated to photographers and documentary filmmakers who record the aftermath of war and present human experience in the most dangerous circumstances, has opened at the Cannes Film Festival.

Details: The exhibition honours photographers who have documented the war in Ukraine. It centres on the work of French photojournalist Antoni Lallican, who was killed in Donetsk Oblast in October 2025, and Ukrainian photographer Heorhii Ivanchenko, who worked alongside Lallican and was seriously injured.

Quote: "This is the first joint presentation of their photographs in one space. Antoni's colour works focus on the human being at the centre of war. Heorhii's black-and-white landscapes speak of war through silence, absence and evidence of destruction."

Background:

  • French photojournalist Antoni Lallican had been working in Ukraine since 2022. He documented the impact of war and civilian life in Donetsk Oblast. In 2024, he was awarded the Victor Hugo Prize for his reportage on Ukraine, "Suddenly the Sky Darkened".
  • The exhibition also features works by Ukrainian documentary photographer Maks Levin, who had documented Russian aggression against Ukraine since 2014. He was killed by Russian soldiers in Kyiv Oblast in spring 2022.
  • This year, Chernov will chair the jury for the Œil d'or (Golden Eye) documentary film award at the Cannes Film Festival.
