Following media reports that Volodymyr Zelenskyy will not visit Serbia this week, the Office of the President of Ukraine has said the trip will take place at a later date.

Details: "It was decided that other dates would be better, while Kachka [Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine – ed.] will travel there for now to lay the groundwork on certain issues," Lytvyn said in response to a question about media reports on Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to Serbia.

Background:

  • Serbian broadcaster N1 had previously reported, citing sources in Belgrade, that a Ukrainian delegation was expected to visit Serbia later this week and could be headed by Zelenskyy himself.
  • However, Ukrainian media outlet ZN.UA later reported that Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Taras Kachka is expected to travel to Belgrade.
  • On 20 May, Vučić and Zelenskyy held a phone call. Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Taras Kachka will lead the Ukrainian delegation.
  • Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić described his conversation with Zelenskyy as "open and constructive".
  • Relations between Kyiv and Belgrade have been complicated because of Serbia's traditionally pro-Moscow stance.
